In this article:

There is no official waiting time

Advice columns pick a number of minutes. Your chat does not owe them that number. What can be measured is the thread you actually have.

One forgotten night pulls an average upward. The median is the middle. Half the replies are faster, half are slower.

“How long should you wait to text back” is the question columns answer with a fixed number of minutes. This chat does not owe that number. Maya at 3 minutes is not a duty, and Sam at 41 is not a fault. Set each median next to the thread’s 6 minutes. That is the comparison this chat can support.

The share that takes more than an hour

On Maya and Sam’s thread, the middle of the chat is 6 minutes. Maya’s median is 3 minutes, Sam’s is 41. 27 percent of Sam’s replies arrive after an hour. “Takes hours to reply” and “takes forever to reply” point at that share, not at the 6-minute middle. A short median and a slow share sit together, because half the replies are faster than 6 minutes.

The count stops at four hours. After that, the next message opens a conversation. It is no longer a reply. Replying and texting first stay two figures. Sam replies, with a median of 41 minutes, and he opens only 24 percent of the starts.

A long wait is not left on read

The export does not say whether the message was opened. It says when the reply left. A long gap can be a late look, a forgotten phone, or a chosen pause. The figure does not decide.

Sam’s 41 minutes are when his reply left, not when he opened the message. “Takes forever to reply” can be a late look. The export does not show that look.

Frequently asked questions

How long is too long to text back?

There is no single normal. Your median is the number that belongs to this thread. One hour is not a fault. It is a line that shows the slow share, next to the median.

Why not the average?

One reply forgotten until the next day drags the average up. The median stays in the middle of the real replies.

Does it show left on read?

No. Exports have no read receipt.

Where is the figure?

On import in MonLivreSMS. The summary is free.
