Keep a dated copy of a chat
A cropped screenshot loses the next day, and sometimes the time. An export keeps the name, the date and the order of the messages.
This guide explains how to keep a copy you can read. It does not say what a court or a consulate will accept.
A copy you can use still makes sense six months later, without guessing which screenshot belongs to which day. The file already has the order.
Export instead of screenshots
A screenshot shows a slice of the screen. The next day vanishes as soon as you scroll. An export takes the chat as the app stores it: who speaks, at what time, in what order.
WhatsApp: the export guide. Texts and iMessage: how to print messages without a stack of screenshots. Instagram: the DM archive.
Export while the thread is still in the app. The next day, a new phone or a cleared chat does not make the screenshots more complete.
When you copy
Leave the thread, keep the file
Deleting the chat afterwards does not make the copy clearer. If the file is incomplete, you have nowhere to go back. Keep the original in its own folder, and work on a copy.
Do not paste bubbles into a document and change the times. A useful copy keeps the dates from the file. If several apps cover the same period, one timeline avoids two printouts that disagree.
Work on a copy. If you trim a period for a PDF, the original folder stays whole, with the dates the app wrote.
Reread, without promising the outcome
A dated PDF is easier to read than a raw .txt. It helps you find a line, a date, a photo. It decides nothing. The printed book is for keeping the story, not for building a case file.
For a couple's keepsake, the steps sit elsewhere: the chat as a book. The pages linked below send you back here for the method.
In the book, you find the sentence, with its time. The PDF is included. It does not say what a court, a consulate or an insurer will do with it. For that, the official notice or your own advice is the source.
Two things, side by side
The original file stays beside it. The book is for holding the conversation. It does not build a case.
Reread without adding anything
Open the start and the end. The names are the ones from the app. The times follow. If a month is missing, the export stopped there. You do not fill the gap by hand.
The start
The first date in the file, not the one you remember.
The end
The last line that was exported. Past that, there is nothing to invent.
The PDF
A calmer reading. The original file stays next to it.
The specific pages, a visa, a dispute, harassment, send you back here for the method. They do not change the limit: a readable copy is not a decision.
Find the line, then the book
The copy becomes something you can hold. A word, and the bubble comes back, with its time.
Search
The word, the name. You land back on the bubble.
The time
The message's time, not the screenshot's.
The book
To reread, in your hands. The PDF is included. The outcome is decided elsewhere.
In the app, a word or a first name is enough to find the bubble. Every message keeps the date and time from the chat. You choose where the book starts and where it stops, then you flip through the preview. Photos stay on the page. A voice note or a video opens from the QR code. The PDF comes with the book. The book is for holding the conversation and rereading it. It does not say what a court, a consulate, a bank or an insurer will do with it.
Common questions
Should I delete the thread after exporting?
No. The app stays the source. The file is a copy. Unless an adviser tells you otherwise, leave the chat where it is.
Are screenshots enough?
They cut off at the edge of the screen. The time on screen is not always the time of the message. An export is steadier.
Will a PDF be accepted as evidence?
Nobody here can promise that. Keep the original file too, and follow the official guidance or your adviser.
Where should the export live?
In its own folder, with the day in the name. The thread in the app stays put. The file is a copy, not a replacement.
