Good to know

Save harassing messages safely

If messages make you uneasy, keep a dated copy while they are still on your phone.

Do not tell the person you are putting a file together. Then speak to the police or a lawyer. This page does not explain how to manufacture evidence.

The aim is narrow: keep what has already arrived, with the dates, without staging it and without warning the person.

On this page

Keep what is already there

Export the chat from your phone, or save the thread as it appears, with the dates. Store the original file. Write down the day of the copy.

Already received

You copy what arrived. You do not write the next part.

The dates

They come from the export, not from a caption under a screenshot.

Quietly

Announcing the copy can make things worse. You do not have to say it.

The method is in keep a dated copy. Depending on the app: WhatsApp or texts.

Make the copy while the messages are still in the app. Then put the file away from the thread, with the day in the name.

Do not invent, do not warn them

Do not add messages. Do not change the times. Do not tell the sender you are « building a file ». They may delete on their side, or push harder.

Do not use someone else's account. Stay with what your phone already received.

No one here explains how to fabricate an exchange, or how to hide one. A useful copy is plain: it follows the file.

1
No stagingYou do not paste bubbles back together, you do not change the times, you do not add a reply.
2
No passwordYou do not ask the other person for access to their account. An export of what you received is enough.
3
No baitYou do not write in order to get one more sentence. The copy stops at the last message already there.

Then a person who can help

The copy does not decide what happens next. Depending on the country, the police, a lawyer or a support service will say what to file, and in what form.

If you send the file to a tool so it is easier to read, know what you are handing over: the file is not harmless.

A PDF can help you reread without opening the app every time. It does not replace a person who knows the frame: police, a doctor, a lawyer, depending on what you are living. The copy method is here: keep a dated copy.

The file, then a person

Keep the original. Show it to someone competent if you have them. This page does not say what to do next.

Then someone who can help

Once the copy is made, you do not have to stay in the thread to "complete" it. The folder is dated. That is enough to show, if you decide to, to someone whose work this is.

The folder

A clear name, the day, the original left as it is.

The app

The thread can stay. Deleting it does not make anything clearer.

The person

Someone who knows the steps, not an article.

If the messages come from work, the limit is different: what your phone already holds, not the employer's files.

Find the line, then the book

You find the message without rewriting it. The date and time are the ones from the file.

Search

The word, the name. You land back on the bubble.

The time

The message's time, not the screenshot's.

The book

To reread, in your hands. The PDF is included. The outcome is decided elsewhere.

In the app, a word or a first name is enough to find the bubble. Every message keeps the date and time from the chat. You choose where the book starts and where it stops, then you flip through the preview. Photos stay on the page. A voice note or a video opens from the QR code. The PDF comes with the book. The book is for holding the conversation and rereading it. It does not say what a court, a consulate, a bank or an insurer will do with it.

Common questions

Should I reply to get more?

No. Writing back can make things worse. Keep what already arrived, then ask for advice.

Can I delete after exporting?

Not right away. The app stays the source. An adviser may need to look there.

Is a PDF enough to report it?

No. It is a readable copy. A report goes to the police or the adviser you choose.

Should you reply in order to "have proof"?

No. A message sent to provoke a follow-up is not a copy. You keep what is already there.
