Good to know

Text messages as a dated record

A dated text or chat says who wrote, at what time, and what. It does not carry the tone of a phone call, or proof the other person actually read it.

This page is about keeping a readable record. It does not say what a judge will do with it.

The file shows an order. It does not say what a judge, an insurer or a platform will do with it.

On this page

What the file shows

An export of texts or a chat lines up a name, a date, a sentence. You can find an agreement, a time, a refusal, without rebuilding it from memory.

The order

Messages stay in the sequence the app wrote.

The names

The ones from the thread. Not a title added later.

The gap

A missing week stays missing. You do not rewrite it.

Texts and iMessage do not have the same button as WhatsApp. The steps are here: print your messages. For WhatsApp: export the chat.

Open a page in the middle, not only the first. You can see whether the days follow, or whether the export skipped a month.

What the file does not show

It does not hold the ten-minute call between two lines. It does not say whether the person understood. A cropped screenshot can hide the line just above.

Do not add a sentence to « complete » the thread. If a message is already gone from the app, say so. Do not rewrite it.

The file does not carry the tone of a phone call, or an agreement that only happened out loud. A photo taken somewhere else is not part of the chat if it was never sent there.

A copy you can reread

Leave the chat in place. Store the original file. The shared method is in keep a dated copy of a chat.

Before you send that file to a site, read what it actually holds: is an upload safe.

The PDF helps you reread. The general method, with no promise about the outcome, is here: keep a dated copy.

1
Both endsThe first date and the last. If they do not cover the period, the PDF will not stretch it.
2
The original, untouchedYou read a copy. The export folder is not a draft.
3
Nothing addedNo sentence to "connect the dots", no time retyped from memory.

A reading, not an outcome

You find a sentence and a date. What someone else does with that is decided elsewhere, on a notice or with advice.

Read both ends

Note three markers: the first day, the last, and a message in the middle that you remember. If it is there, at the right time, the copy holds. If it is not, the copy is incomplete, and that is useful to know.

The first day

It comes from the file, not from memory.

The middle

A line you recognise, on its date.

The last day

Where the export actually stops.

Keep that finding with the file. Do not turn it into a more convincing text.

Find the line, then the book

You stop stacking screenshots. You open the thread, you search the line, the time is the one from the app.

Search

The word, the name. You land back on the bubble.

The time

The message's time, not the screenshot's.

The book

To reread, in your hands. The PDF is included. The outcome is decided elsewhere.

In the app, a word or a first name is enough to find the bubble. Every message keeps the date and time from the chat. You choose where the book starts and where it stops, then you flip through the preview. Photos stay on the page. A voice note or a video opens from the QR code. The PDF comes with the book. The book is for holding the conversation and rereading it. It does not say what a court, a consulate, a bank or an insurer will do with it.

Common questions

Is a screenshot a record?

It shows a slice. It cuts off, and the time on screen can be the phone's clock, not the message time. An export is clearer.

Does a read receipt prove anything?

It shows a marker in the app, at a moment. It does not replace the text. Keep both if the app shows them.

Do I need a printed book?

No. For rereading, a dated PDF is often enough. The book is for keeping the story, not for a case file.

Is one screenshot enough?

It cuts the thread at the edge of the screen. The time on display is not always the time of the message. The export keeps the sequence.
